NY Halal-Cart Style Chicken

If you’ve been to NYC, you’ve hopefully had "street meat." We’re talking super tender chicken served piping hot with a mouth-watering sauce. We’re aiming for those flavors here with our Harissa: cumin, cinnamon, and the heat and warmth of pepper. You can serve the chicken over rice or roasted potatoes, but we love a DIY approach — laying out the garnishes and toppings with a platter of warm pita or naan.

Chef Tip: Our way of getting super tender chicken is to add a bit of vinegar to the marinade and to start the cooking high, then cover and reduce to a lower heat. Vinegar helps to break down the proteins, starting the "cooking" process. Covering the pan helps to trap the hot moisture, and ensure your chicken is juicy and tender!


  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced

  • White Wine vinegar

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips

  • Olive oil

  • Haven’s Kitchen Zippy Chili Harissa

  • Salt

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced or grated

  • 4oz hummus

  • 1 avocado, cut into slices

  • Yogurt sauce, optional



In a small bowl, cover the onions with vinegar and set aside


In a large bowl, toss the chicken with a drizzle of olive oil, a hefty squeeze of Harissa, ½ cup of vinegar, and a pinch of salt. Cover the bowl and chill for 10-15 minutes


In a large, lidded pan over high heat, add a glug of olive oil, and the minced garlic. When the garlic becomes fragrant, add the chicken and the marinade. Cook for about five minutes, stirring occasionally. Cover the pan and lower the heat to medium-low. cook for another 10-15 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through


Serve the chicken with a scoop of hummus, some onions, and avocado slices
